Paulo Fonseca reportedly has doubts over the Roma proposal, so Roberto De Zerbi and current Italy U21 Coach Gigi Di Biagio are options.
Shakhtar Donetsk are open to releasing Fonseca for free after three years together, so directors Gianluca Petrachi and Fienga flew out to Lisbon for discussions with the Portuguese boss.
The latest rumour from Tuttomercatoweb is that Fonsenca isn’t entirely convinced by the project presented to him.
It would be a three-year contract worth €2.5m per season, but his family is also fairly content in Ukraine and not eager to move on.
De Zerbi of Sassuolo would therefore become the favourite, although a new option is Di Biagio.
A former Roma midfielder, Di Biagio is at the helm of the Italy Under-21 squad, who go into the European Championships later this month.
He also temporarily took the senior Italy job as caretaker manager before Roberto Mancini’s appointment in May 2018.
