Italy will play Mali in the Under-20 World Cup quarter-finals, as the Africans caused an upset by eliminating Argentina on penalties.

The Azzurrini secured their spot with Sunday’s 1-0 win over hosts Poland, meaning they have won three of their games so far in the tournament and drawn with Japan.

They will face Mali in the quarter-final on Friday June 7.

Argentina were the favourites to get through and were twice leading Mali in tonight’s Round of 16 tie, but were pegged back to a 2-2 draw after extra time.

It went to penalties and Tomas Chancalay saw his spot-kick saved by goalkeeper Youssouf Koita.

Elsewhere in the tournament, the USA knocked out France 3-2 thanks in part to an error from Fiorentina goalkeeper Alban Lafont.

South Korea eliminated Japan 1-0 to reach the quarter-finals of the Under-20 World Cup.
