The Azzurri dominated the Euro 2020 qualifier in Athens, scoring all three goals in a 10-minute spell through Nicolò Barella, Lorenzo Insigne and Leonardo Bonucci.

“I don’t think it was our best performance. The important thing is that we continued to improve, we did well from the first minute and put the match on the right track,” the Coach told Rai Sport.

“The most important aspect now is why didn’t we score a fourth goal in the second half? We should’ve pushed harder, at times sat back and should’ve converted some of the other chances.

“We risked conceding, as Greece nearly hurt us on the counter a couple of times.”

Mancini had been expected to start Fabio Quagliarella and Federico Bernardeschi, but instead chose Andrea Belotti and Insigne.

“It wasn’t easy for us to pick, but Insigne seemed in good shape. Leaving out Leonardo Pavoletti, Bernardeschi or Quagliarella isn’t easy, but we thought it was the best thing to do.”

Mancini was asked if he’d have taken being three points clear at the top of the Euro 2020 qualifying group a year ago?

“I said we’re ahead of schedule, but still have a lot of work to do. The Nations League didn’t go that badly either, as we were in the running until the last game.”
