Fabian Ruiz believes Napoli were “unlucky in Europe” and so close to eliminating Liverpool, but they will “fight Juventus for the Scudetto next season.”

The Azzurri came third in their Champions League group behind Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool, finishing on nine points, but went out on goal difference.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men beat the Premier League side 1-0 at home thanks to a Lorenzo Insigne goal and were a late Alisson save in final group game away from knocking the eventual champions out, as the tie in Anfield also ended 1-0.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men beat the Premier League side 1-0 at home thanks to a Lorenzo Insigne goal and were a late Alisson save in final group game away from knocking the eventual champions out, as the tie in Anfield also ended 1-0.

“Alisson’s save in the last group game was vital for Liverpool,” Fabian Ruiz told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“We did very well in the Champions League this season, we beat the eventual winners and we only went out on a fine margin. It was a real shame to go out on goal difference.

“Having said that, I think Liverpool deserved to win for the football they played all season. As far as Napoli is concerned, I hope that next year we can have a bit more luck in Europe.”

The Partenopei finished runners-up in Serie A, but were a full 11 points off the Scudetto winners.

“The previous season we were very close to Juventus, this year, however, we were further away. We are growing and I think we will fight for the Scudetto next season.”
