Lazio forward Ciro Immobile’s lawyer released a statement categorically denying he is involved in a Spanish match-fixing and betting scandal.

His name was mentioned in leaked wiretapped telephone conversations between two people arrested as part of the Operation Oikos investigation.

It was said by one of the participants that Immobile regularly placed illegal bets.

This evening, Immobile’s lawyer released a statement noting the player was “completely extraneous to these matters and categorically denies any involvement.

“The player has already instructed me to take legal action against anyone who is in any way damaging his reputation, image and professional dignity.

“We therefore also warn anyone against giving credit to and spreading news that is totally false and defamatory.”

The leaked transcript, published first in Marca and then all over Spanish media, also claimed the conspirators were going to meet three or four Frosinone players to suggest they fix a match.
