Revealed: 2019 Golden Boy candidates

The 100 candidates for the 2019 Golden Boy award have been revealed, including Gianluigi Donnarumma, Moise Kean and Nicolo Zaniolo.

There have been 16 previous winners of the prize that recognises the best under-21 player of the past season, going from Rafael van der Vaart in 2003 to last year’s claimant Matthijs de Ligt.

European media come together to vote for their choices, including Corriere dello Sport, Gazzetta dello Sport, Marca, L’Equipe, Bild, The Times, Blick, De Telegraaf, A Bola, Sport-Express, Aftonbladet and SportDay.

Among the candidates are 12 Italians, with Donnarumma, Kean and Zaniolo joined by Domenico Alberico, Alessandor Bastoni, Davide Castelli, Pietro Pellegri, Luca Pellegrini, Andrea Pinamonti, Alessandro Plizarri, Gianluca Scamacca, Sandro Tonali and Nicolo Zaniolo.

Rounding off the Italian contingent are five Serie A-based players – Alban Lafont, Justin Kluivert, Leandro Fernandes, Nicolas Schiappacasse and Hamed Traore.
