Spain Under-21 captain Jesus Vallejo hit out at Italy for being ‘dirty’ and ‘doesn’t know’ why Arturo Calabresi was not sent off.

Italy came back from behind to beat Spain 3-1 in their Euro U21 opener on Sunday, but Vallejo was unhappy with the Azzurri’s physical approach.

“On Saturday we were told that any kick above the knee would be a red card and that the referees who didn’t follow that line wouldn’t be given any more games, but that wasn’t the case,” the Real Madrid defender said after the game.

“Italy were very dirty. Even though it shouldn’t be an excuse for losing, it’s also true that you can’t say one thing and then do another.”

Bologna full-back Arturo Calabresi was booked for a kick on Dani Ceballos just 11 minutes in…

“I don’t know why the player who badly fouled Ceballos wasn’t sent off.”
