FIGC President Gabriele Gravina urged Italy “not to let our heads drop now” after a European U21 Championship defeat to Poland.

The Azzurrini had beaten Spain 3-1 on Sunday, but undid all that good work this evening with a 1-0 result.

“It was a difficult, complicated and bitter evening for the result, but we have to concentrate on the final group game,” the Federation chief told Rai Sport.

“We had the chance today to secure qualification for the semi-final, we didn’t take it, and now our fate also depends on what the others do.”

Poland have six points, Italy and Spain three, while their final opponents Belgium are already eliminated on zero.

“It’s important to maintain faith, because as we saw this evening, football can bring some surprises. I will certainly meet with the players, as we cannot let our heads drop now. Their courage and determination must emerge more than ever after this game.

“Many Italians followed the game with passion and we dominated the encounter, yet for a series of reasons, we lost. We have to immediately put this to one side and prepare for the next match.

“I was with the lads and can guarantee there was no excessive euphoria or over-confidence after the victory over Spain. On Saturday there is a difficult game, but one that is within our grasp.”
