Moise Kean is dropped for turning up late to a team meeting, so Lorenzo Pellegrini, Manuel Locatelli, Federico Chiesa and Patrick Cutrone start in Italy’s must-win game with Belgium.
The concluding group match of the European Under-21 Championship kicks off at the Mapei Stadium at 20.00 UK time (19.00 GMT).
The Azzurrini need to win the game, but also hope Spain beat Poland by one or two clear goals. Any more than two clear goals, and the goal difference would put Spain top of the group rather than Italy.
Only the three group winners and the best runners-up go through to the semi-finals, but Italy’s chances of taking that last berth are very slim.
Nicolò Zaniolo is suspended for Italy, with Riccardo Orsolini injured, so Kean was expected to start in an all-star trident with Chiesa and Cutrone.
However, a few hours before kick-off, it emerged Kean and Zaniolo were frozen out by Coach Gigi Di Biagio for turning up late to a team meeting.
Kean is still present, albeit on the bench, but not having the Juventus striker in the starting XI is a blow to their chances.
Instead, the 4-3-3 formation is scrapped in favour of a 4-2-3-1, with Lorenzo Pellegrini, Sassuolo’s Manuel Locatelli and Chiesa fanning out behind Cutrone.
Belgium lost both group games, but put up a fight, as they fell 3-2 to Poland and 2-1 to Spain.
Centre-back Wout Faes is suspended, so Rocky Bushiri steps in alongside Sebastiaan Bornauw for the defence.
Alexis De Sart lost out to Bryan Heynen for the midfield role, while the attack has Dodi Lukebakio flanked Alexis Saelemaekers.
There are starts for Genoa midfielder Stephane Omeonga and ex-Chievo man Samuel Bastien.
Belgium Coach Johan Walem is no stranger to Italy, having played for Udinese, Parma, Torino and Catania from 1997 to 2005.
