Patrick Cutrone admits he “almost burst into tears” after breaking his five-month goal drought, but Italy’s 3-1 win over Belgium was not enough.
“It was so emotional and I almost burst into tears. I have not gone through a good period, as I haven’t played much and didn’t score since January, so it meant a lot to me,” the Milan striker told Rai Sport.
The victory means Italy are second in the group, behind Spain on goal difference, but their chances of being the best runners-up are frankly slim.
“Now we have to hope France do us a favour and unfortunately now need to rely on other teams. The dream is to go as far as possible, especially as we’re at home, in front of our fans and we’ll never get this opportunity again.
“Hopefully luck is on our side.”
