Award-winning director Paolo Sorrentino revealed he filmed a scene for The Young Pope about a Napoli Scudetto that was cut “for superstition.”

The series starring Jude Law and set in the Vatican included a main character called Cardinal Voiello, played by Neapolitan actor Silvio Orlando.

Voiello was a passionate Napoli supporter – like the director – and seen several times reading about the Partenopei or watching their games.

The series starring Jude Law and set in the Vatican included a main character called Cardinal Voiello, played by Neapolitan actor Silvio Orlando.

Voiello was a passionate Napoli supporter – like the director – and seen several times reading about the Partenopei or watching their games.

Sorrentino has now revealed there was a scene that they filmed of Cardinal Voiello celebrating a Napoli Scudetto by standing inside a fountain fully clothed.

However, it was a “deleted scene for superstition.”

At the time of filming, Napoli were top of the table, but they eventually lost out to Juventus.

Napoli fans also embraced the character, famously holding up a banner during one of their matches that read: ‘Cardinal Voiello is one of us.’
