Palermo could be replaced by Venezia in Serie B after they failed to register in time for next season.
The likes of Gianluca Di Marzio, Sportitalia and Tuttomercatoweb report Palermo did not deposit their papers before Tuesday’s deadline of 23:00 BST.
As it stands, the Rosanero will be denied entry into the second tier and replaced by Venezia, who lost their relegation playout to Salernitana.
However, Di Marzio and Sportitalia have since followed up that club directors maintain they sent the necessary documents a minute before the cut-off point.
Lega Serie B officials went through the papers and concluded they not only came in late but also did in the wrong manner.
In the meantime, a group of fans have caused a minor disturbance outside the side’s offices in the Sicilian capital, setting off fireworks.
The 2018-19 campaign saw Palermo go through four different owners and win promotion to Serie A, only to then be demoted to Serie C for financial irregularities and finally reinstated to the second tier.
