The goalkeeper spent only one season in Florence and today completed his two-year loan move to Nantes, with option to buy for a reported €7m and counter-option for the Viola.
“To be honest, I was very happy in Florence and it’s a beautiful city that will remain in my heart. I just felt that my journey here had come to an end,” Lafont told Firenzeviola.it.
“I take full responsibility for this choice and I had decided long before the end of the season that I would leave. I explained to my entourage the desire to go to a different club and fortunately it was all concluded quickly.
“In truth, a return to France wasn’t my first choice, as I wanted to experience other cultures, but at the end of the day I decided to go back to where I’d performed at my best.”
It was reported that Fiorentina were more than happy to let Lafont leave, seeing as Bartlomiej Dragowski was so impressive during his six-month loan spell with Empoli.
“I was never troubled by controversy or criticism of some of my performances, which admittedly weren’t the best. I don’t read the newspapers or social media comments.
“I always remained concentrated and trained hard to be in good shape. I was unlucky, because my first Serie A season coincided with a complicated phase in Fiorentina history for reasons that were outside my control.
“Now I want to focus only on my new adventure with Nantes. I sincerely thank Fiorentina, all my teammates and the fans who helped me even during difficult times. I will continue to shout ‘Forza Viola’ within me.”
