It has also been reported that he will become the club’s highest-paid player thanks to a salary worth up to €6.75m.

The 33-year-old made almost 400 appearances for Atleti in nine seasons at the club, winning a Spanish title and two Europa Leagues, as well as reaching two Champions League Finals.

He has 131 caps for Uruguay and represented his country at nine major tournaments, although he was unable to stop them from going out on penalties to Peru in the Copa America quarter-finals.

Godin becomes the Nerazzurri’s first summer signing and could be followed shortly by Hertha Berlin winger Valentino Lazaro, who has landed in Milan for a medical.  .
