Godin: Inter want to win again

Diego Godin says he joined Inter to ‘give all of myself, on and off the field’ and because ‘they want to start winning things again.’

Godin completed his transfer to Inter on Monday, signing a three-year contract with the Nerazzurri, and the defender is ready to help them end their trophy drought - ongoing since the Coppa Italia in 2011.

“I came to Inter to win, to give my all and give all of myself: my body and soul, on and off the field,” the former Atletico Madrid captain told Inter TV.

“A new challenge and a new experience begin for me. Inter are a great team, a very important one, among the best in Europe.

“I really want to keep competing at high levels, doing my best on and off the field to help this great team achieve important objectives.

“I chose Inter because they’re a great club, a great team with a lot of history. They have great ambition and desire to achieve important objectives.

“I’ll try to do my bit and give everything on and off the field. I’ll try to help my teammates and club to achieve important objectives.

“I chose Inter because they have an ambitious sporting project. They want to start winning again and are a great team, both in Europe and around the world.”

The 33-year-old becomes the latest Uruguayan to play for the Beneamata after the likes of Alvaro Recoba and Matias Vecino.

“I talked to them both, especially Matias, who is a friend of mine.  He spoke very well of the team, the city and, above all, the ambitions of the club, which are also objectives.

“I really want to get going and having a friend in the dressing room is very important to me: it’ll surely help me get to know my teammates.”

Finally, he was asked for his thoughts on Italian football as he prepares to make Serie A his home.

“It’s an experience that I’ll get to know by playing, but it’s also a style of football that I’ve followed since I was a child, given so much Italian football is watched in Uruguay.

“I have so many expectations and great enthusiasm. I’m looking forward to it. Serie A attracts me, it’ll be a great challenge.

“I arrive with great desire and that will certainly help make everything more beautiful.

“I’ll try to do my best on and off the field to help the team and my teammates.”
