The introduction of the new technology has provided a few teething problems, particularly during the Copa America and Women’s World Cup, although Serie A is already getting accustomed to it.

Discussing plans for the 2019-20 campaign, Nicchi had some suggestions for the future.

“It’d be great for one weekend during an important game for the Presidents to sit together and watch it in the VAR booth. Why not? That way, we might avoid people saying silly things after the match.

“This is the kind of thing that might seem impossible today, but could happen one day.”

Technology is advancing so much that Nicchi also believes referees should join the media revolution.

“It’s an idea for let’s say on Tuesday that the referees could get together at Coverciano and explain the dynamics of the situation that led them to their decisions at the weekend.”

There are also plans to set up a new VAR centre in Florence that would in turn act as a training centre.

“I hope the Mayor of Florence can soon give us the authorisation to begin building work. It is a sensational project, as in there can debate, explain and make everything clear.”
