Mihajlovic to make statement on illness

Sinisa Mihajlovic will make a statement today after reports he could leave the Bologna job to battle a serious illness.

The Corriere dello Sport broke the story via Ivan Zazzaroni, a friend of the Serbian tactician who writes for the newspaper.

A Press conference has been organised for 16.30 local time at the Bologna base in Casteldebole.

Mihajlovic did not travel with the squad for pre-season training this week to Castelrotto in Alto Adige.

Officially, it was because he was suffering from flu symptoms and had a fever, but the condition concerned medical staff, who ordered more tests.

The newspaper reports Mihajlovic has been advised to begin aggressive treatment on a serious illness.

He could either take some time off and return to the Bologna bench or leave the job and decide to focus entirely on his recovery.

The 50-year-old had his very first senior coaching role at Bologna in 2008 and returned in January 2019 to replace Pippo Inzaghi, steering them from the relegation zone to a 10th-place Serie A finish.

Mihajlovic has been in Italy since 1992 as a player for Roma, Sampdoria, Lazio and Inter.

After retirement in 2006, he started working as Roberto Mancini’s assistant manager at Inter until taking his first job with Bologna in November 2008.

He went on to be the Coach of Catania, Fiorentina, Sampdoria, Milan, Torino and Bologna again.

Mihajlovic was also the manager of the Serbia national team from May 2012 to November 2013, while he signed for Sporting CP last summer only to be fired within days after a change of President.
