Papu Gomez believes Atalanta “could be a surprise in the Champions League, because we play in a different way to everyone else.”

They set a new club record by finishing third in Serie A, reached the Coppa Italia Final and will be in the Champions League for the first time ever.

“If someone had told me a year ago we’d be in the Champions League, I’d have thought they were mad,” Papu told Sky Sport Italia.

“If someone had told me a year ago we’d be in the Champions League, I’d have thought they were mad,” Papu told Sky Sport Italia.

“Our objective was to get back into the Europa League, but then as time wore on, our position in Serie A started to look stronger and stronger. It was ultimately something we fought very hard for.”

Atalanta are bound to get a very tough draw in the group phase, but the idea of facing the biggest clubs excites the Argentine.

“It’s always wonderful to take on champions like Lionel Messi. Whether they’re English, Spanish, it’ll all be fascinating. There is a big gap between the Europa League and Champions League, but we play in a different way to everyone else in the competition, so we could be a surprise.

“It’ll be like playing against Juventus and Napoli every single week. It’ll be very difficult to get through the group phase, but we’ll try to always play our way, in other words going for the victory wherever we are.”
