Genoa completed an extraordinary comeback from 3-1 down to beat Olympique Lyonnais 4-3 in a pre-season friendly with Christian Kouame’s acrobatic volley.
The Grifone are aiming high in their pre-season friendlies by facing a Lyon side that finished third in Ligue 1 last term.
Tiago Mendes put the French outfit in front after just 11 minutes by pouncing on Cristian Romero’s misplaced pass and beating Jandrei despite the goalkeeper getting a hand to it.
Kouame was brought down for a penalty, converted by Domenico Criscito, and Genoa almost turned it around with a tough save on Andrea Pinamonti.
Lyon started to take control after the break and surged 3-1 up through Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa’s header on a corner and a curler from Boubacar Fofana.
However, the Grifone mounted a surprising comeback with Paolo Ghiglione cutting in from the right flank to blast in with his left after a cheeky dummy.
Yanga-Mbiwa’s goal-line clearance denied Antonio Sanabria a tap-in, but Oscar Hiljemark’s spectacular volley completed the fightback for 3-3.
It still wasn’t over, as Kouame ran on to a forward move from substitute Andras Schafer to beat Ciprian Tatarusanu and scored with a sensational scissor-kick volley to give Genoa the 4-3 victory.
