“So many people have already stopped me in the street to show their encouragement over the last few days. I hope to stay here for a long time and as soon as I received the offer, I jumped at it.

“There are organised defences in Serie A and great strikers. I can play as a full-back or in the centre, but my objective either way is to become a leader at the back.”

Bologna Coach Sinisa Mihajlovic remains in hospital after completing the first cycle of chemotherapy to battle leukaemia, but he remains in constant contact with his staff and watches training sessions via livestreaming services.

“I haven’t met the Coach yet, but we did speak on the telephone.”
