The midfielder only left Roma a year ago, but was told this summer under new Coach Antonio Conte that he had no place in the squad and had to find another club.

He opted for a return on loan to Cagliari, where he first made his Serie A mark from 2010-14.

“I’m happy to be back home. I made a choice, it was a little bit forced upon me, but in the end, I made this decision and I hope to do well there.

“I have other priorities right now, so it was easy to make the choice in that case,” he told Tuttomercatoweb after a farewell dinner with his Inter teammates.

The priorities are very important indeed, as he’s moving to ensure his wife Claudia – who is from Sardinia – can be closer to her family as she battles cancer.

Nainggolan also has a point to prove, though, after the Nerazzurri refused to even consider him for this season.

“Now I’ll challenge myself, put myself back out there and try to prove Inter were wrong to let me go."

He's expected to begin training with Cagliari over the weekend ahead of a medical on Monday.
