Marco Giampaolo urged Milan to keep ‘world-class’ Suso, but his performance was not enough to prevent a penalties defeat to Manchester United.

Suso’s slick curler from outside the box was the pick of the goals in Cardiff as the International Champions Cup finale finished 2-2, but United went on to win 5-4 on penalties after Daniel Maldini missed the decisive spot-kick.

“We still lack attention to detail, but we’ll only acquire it with time,” Giampaolo said after the game.

“The team have received the bulk of what I’m trying to implement and are playing with a good mentality.

“The thing I like most is that they’re all on the same page with an idea. Attention to detail is part of the job, but the lads have got the bulk of the music I’m trying to play.

“Milan have some strong, quality players. After that, if we learn the score we want to play then we’ll be even stronger.

“There will be slowdowns, but I like the attachment and participation that the players are showing.

“Suso is world-class. I told him and the club that. Suso isn’t a problem for us. We must keep our best players.

“Calhanoglu is a universal footballer. I put him in the middle of the park because Biglia had a tendon problem and I didn’t want to risk him too much. I really like Lucas.”

The Coach then looked to take the pressure off Maldini’s shoulders following his miss.

“It’s all good. It was only right that he took the penalty, given he was down as our fifth taker.

“Unfortunately he missed, but it’s been a useful path for him. Lads like him need matches to grow, and if they don’t then they don't grow.”
