Milan have formally announced the purchase of Ismael Bennacer from Empoli in a deal believed to be worth €16m plus bonuses.

The 21-year-old Algeria international underwent his medical on July 23 and signed the five-year contract, with a salary of €1.5m per season.

It was only officially confirmed this morning, though, as he went on an extended vacation following the Africa Cup of Nations triumph.

Bennacer had impressed at Empoli last season, with three assists in 37 Serie A games.

His profile rose sharply during the Africa Cup of Nations, where he was named Player of the Tournament, but he had already pledged himself to Milan by that stage.

Other offers came in, most notably from the Premier League, but Bennacer kept his word.

He spent time at the Arsenal youth academy and they had the opportunity to match Milan’s offer as part of the deal with Empoli, but declined.
