Saponara spent last season on loan at Samp but returns to the city of Genoa with the Rossoblu, despite the two clubs being fierce rivals.

“I like the city, it’s a pleasure for me to come back here,” the attacker told Tuttomercatoweb after he checked in for his medical.

“I chose Genoa because they were the best opportunity for me in a football sense, while technically speaking, the President really wanted me.

“At this point of my career, it’s a situation that suits me. I want to do well with this team.

“I expect to find a team who are taking shape with a Coach who knows how to make his teams play well.

“I’m sure I’ll be working with an already well-organised set of people who have great quality.”

What message does the 27-year-old have for any disgruntled Blucerchiato?

“We know how football works now. I understand the bitterness of the Samp fans, but I‘m a professional, I want to do well and give my best.

“I’ll try to make myself loved with my quality. I felt good with the Bianconeri, but this is a new chapter for me.”
