Newcastle United are reportedly ahead of Genoa in the race to sign Lille midfielder Thiago Maia.
Genoa appeared to be closing in on a €7m deal for 50 percent of Maia’s playing rights, but Pianetagenoa1893.net claims Newcastle have dived in with a better offer.
The website stresses the Grifone still have time to hit back with a superior proposal, although they are currently in the midst of tying up Lasse Schone’s arrival from Ajax.
Newcastle, meanwhile, have been linked with a multitude of midfielders this summer but only have until Thursday to bring one in.
The 22-year-old won Olympic gold with Brazil in 2016 and moved to Lille for €14m a year later.
