The news had been in the air, with negotiations reaching a breakthrough yesterday.

It’s reported his wages climbed from €700,000 per year to €2.5m per season, including performance-related bonuses and add-ons.

“It was easy a year ago for me to choose Roma and it was even easier today after a season that allowed me to fall in love with this jersey and this city,” Zaniolo told the club website.

“I would like to thank the club for the opportunity I have been given to bond myself with even more strength to these colours. It is what I wanted.”

The Italy international arrived from Inter last summer as part of the deal taking Radja Nainggolan to San Siro.

Zaniolo’s contract extension effectively quietens rumours of an approach by Juventus.

In his debut season, Zaniolo contributed six goals and two assists in 36 competitive games.

“This choice is a show of the conviction, shared by the club and the player, that Zaniolo can develop his potential in the best possible way at Roma, that potential which lit up the enthusiasm of the fans last season,” added CEO Guido Fienga.

“We are certain that Nicolò will be a protagonist in the future of our team.”
