Riccardo Orsolini admits Bologna players were surprised that Sinisa Mihajlovic attended their Verona game. “He’s lost weight, but otherwise the same as always!”
The Coach has been undergoing chemotherapy for six weeks for leukaemia, keeping in constant contact with his staff and players via streaming technology.
Mihajlovic was absolutely not expected to be on the bench at the Stadio Bentegodi for this evening’s Serie A opener and it was a shock when Bologna confirmed he was attending. In fact, it was a shock to his squad, too.
“He spoke to us via video conference call during the week and said he wasn’t 100 per cent. He told us a month ago that he wanted to be here for this game, but we didn’t think he really would be!” Orsolini told Sky Sport Italia after a 1-1 draw.
“We were so happy that he made us this surprise and saw it as an extra boost. We’re just sorry that we didn’t give him the victory.
“I have a special rapport with the Coach, he put so much faith in me and made me feel like an important player for this team. We miss him in the locker room, obviously he’s a big presence.”
Did the players feel that presence when Mihajlovic was on the touchline tonight?
“He’s lost a bit of weight, but the grit, determination and passion were the same as always!”
