Italy have called up Lazio defender Francesco Acerbi for games against Armenia and Finland after Giorgio Chiellini’s serious knee injury.

Juventus captain Chiellini sprained his knee in training today and tests confirmed a tear to the anterior cruciate ligament.

It will require surgery and this type of injury usually means at least three to six months out.

Italy Coach Roberto Mancini has therefore called up Lazio centre-back Acerbi to replace Chiellini in the squad for their Euro 2020 qualifiers.

The Azzurri visit Armenia on September 5 in Yerevan and face Finland in Tampere on September 8.
