Rolando Maran was unconvinced by the decisive Inter penalty and explained Cagliari’s tactical changes. “Not every contact is a foul.”
The Sardinians have now lost their first two games of the season, both of them on home turf, as after a 1-0 to Brescia, they were beaten 2-1 by Inter.
“The performance was a definite improvement from last week, but it was difficult to get a result against this Inter side. We still had our chances, though, and it was only decided by a soft penalty,” said the Coach in his Press conference.
“In two weeks, we’ve had five or six VAR decisions go against us and I can no longer work out what is a penalty and what isn’t. Not every contact is a foul. The sport seems to be getting more and more complicated and I’ve seen similar incidents judged differently.
“I wanted to comment on a good performance, as we had the best chances of the first half and allowed Inter very little.”
Cagliari were forced to revamp after Leonardo Pavoletti’s serious injury, moving to a 3-5-2 formation, while Giovanni Simeone made his debut off the bench.
“Giovanni arrived with great enthusiasm, but he was not at 100 per cent and I am sure he’ll do better with some more minutes in his legs. The break for international duty is a bonus for us, as we can get work done in training.
“Aside from the result today, I did see positive things, so I am not worried. We tried the 3-5-2 throughout the summer, so that wasn’t new. We mirrored the Inter system tonight and slowed their progress, then were playing in their half when we conceded the goal.
“I was going to put another striker on at the end, but there were too many players asking me to come off as they were exhausted, so I preferred not to make us too unbalanced.”
