Milan were active on deadline day, exchanging Andre Silva for Rebic on a two-year loan, while the transfer window was Boban’s first since returning as Chief Football Officer.

“The transfer window was so tough, even if it was a bit fun,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“It stresses out teams and Coaches, plus the season has already started. It’s caused a bit of a mess, but it’s always the case in Italy.

“Rebic is a player with strength and character. He can play in different positions and he’s shown he can play at great levels.

“He can play as a winger, a second striker, between the two strikers and even as a roaming forward.

“He can be used in different roles. He’s a sincere lad who’s improved so much technically. He’s always been strong, quick and a good shooter, but he’s made so much progress.

“The club’s strategy is to invest in young players, but there must also be players with experience and strength, some of whom we already have in the squad.

“We have a nice mix. Perhaps it would be better if we had some more older heads, but this team will improve.

“Milan will grow and get back to where they’re supposed to be, but it’s a process. Milan are a big club who can’t accept drifting around midtable. We must have ambition, but we also need time.”

The Croat was then asked about the Diavolo’s failed pursuits of Modric and Atletico Madrid forward Angel Correa.

“Modric is a real ‘milanista’. He’s been one since he was little and he had so much passion to come here, but it was never serious. He didn’t want to leave Real after one bad season.

“As for Correa, we couldn’t reach an economic agreement and that’s fine. There were also other players who we couldn’t sign. Who knows if that wasn’t a good thing?

“We have a good squad, we’ve made good signings and time will tell us if we’ve done well or badly.”
