Gabriel Batistuta says he has rejected the chance to form part of Diego Maradona’s coaching staff at Argentine club Gimnasia La Plata.

Maradona has been out of work since leaving Mexican side Dorados in June but seems increasingly likely to take over at Gimnasia.

Amidst the speculation, Batistuta has now publicly confirmed that he will not be reuniting with his ex-Albiceleste strike partner and fellow Serie A icon.

“I want to thank Diego Maradona for an offer that I’ve been waiting to receive for a long time,” he tweeted.

“Unfortunately, on September 17 in Basel, I have an operation planned to place a prosthesis in my ankle, which practically doesn’t allow me to walk.

“I truly wish you all the best!”

The 50-year-old has his coaching badges but does not have any prior coaching experience, although he did work as a technical director for Argentine side Colon back in 2013.

He was linked with returning to Fiorentina over the summer in a directorial capacity, but the move never materialised.

‘Batigol’ has also struggled with mobility problems since retiring from professional football in 2005.
