Torino President Urbano Cairo says ‘it’s time for Walter Mazzarri’s contract to be renewed’ and that fielding Italian players is ‘very important’ for Serie A clubs.
Cairo’s remarks come after it was reported Torino were ready to extend Mazzarri’s contract until 2023 after his work in establishing the Granata as a top-six contender.
“Mazzarri’s a great Coach, who’s very attentive to detail,” he told Gazzetta dello Sport.
“I think it’s time for his contract to be renewed.”
The patron was then asked about Simone Verdi, Andrea Belotti, the Italian national team and how Juventus could be toppled.
“We have to keep our feet on the ground. Torino are already very strong and Verdi is an added value for us.
“Mazzarri’s training is different, he needs time to get used to it. It could take as long as a month.
“Belotti did very well with the national team, scoring two goals. I also saw him do well when he came on as a substitute against Finland.
“It seems to me that Italian football is improving: great champions have arrived from abroad, who have made Serie A more attractive and more interesting.
“I think it’s very important to focus on young players, Italian players, because that’s very important for the national team.
“After that, we’ll see what happens on the field. Maybe not only will we have a single team in charge but a bit more competition too.”
