Sergio Ramos believes Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk can pip Cristiano Ronaldo to the Ballon d’Or. “If Fabio Cannavaro won it...”
Van Dijk is striving to become the first centre-back to win the Ballon d’Or since Cannavaro in 2006, after he captained Italy to World Cup glory.
“I don't know, but if Cannavaro won it then why not?” Ramos told AS.
“You have to keep the dream you had as a child so that it can happen. He had a great season.
“We always talk about Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi, but the possibility that another player can win it is a beautiful thing.
“If he wins, I’ll congratulate him. He had a very good season.”
The 33-year-old was then asked whether the Juventus forward was his best-ever teammate at Real Madrid.
“It’s a very difficult question,” he added to Gazzetta dello Sport.
“I played with so many champions, but Cristiano was certainly one of the best in the history of Real and football.
“I also wouldn’t forget the Brazilian Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos, Zidane, Casillas, Raul...”
