“We want to see improvement, the start of our path, even if to be honest, Vincenzo Montella had his first training session with the entire squad present only yesterday,” the director of sport told Sky Sport Italia.

“Games like this are the easiest to prepare, as there is no lack of motivation or focus.”

Montella has seemingly moved to a 3-5-2 for this clash, using Franck Ribery and Chiesa upfront.

“You can ask the Coach. Whatever system you use against Juventus is irrelevant unless you give 100 per cent, sacrifice yourself for the team, surprise them with pressing and put in the perfect performance.”

Chiesa had wanted to push through a move to Juventus over the summer, but new President Rocco Commisso locked him down. Were there any particular discussions that changed his mind?

“There were no phrases to convince him, just the desire to put him at the centre of this project and build something important here. He understood that and we’re sure he will have a great season.

“The role of director of sport has changed now and you need to be a counsellor for the players, the Coach, the staff, to understand Financial Fair Play regulations and keep a close idea on the balance sheet.

“You will make mistakes, it’s all about learning from them and understanding it is going to take time to build anything.”
