The Rondinelle had been 3-1 up and coasting when Dessena received his second yellow card for a foolish and entirely unnecessary dive.

“We played a top qualify first half, developing our forward moves and scoring three goals,” Corini told Sky Sport Italia.

“After the break, the red card not only left us down to 10 men, but removed a fundamental player like Dessena, as we didn’t have anyone with his characteristics to come off the bench.

“It’s a pity, because the goal for 3-3 came from a corner and we could’ve done better with our defending. Unfortunately, the squad is a bit thin on the ground at the moment, some were asking to be substituted and I had few options.

“The overall performance did not deserve a defeat. I disagree with the idea we ‘collapsed’ after the red card, although I do see it’s an easy journalistic short-hand.”

Corini was asked about the change of tactics with Romulo used in the trequartista role.

“My idea is that we have two strikers and supporting them, with four defenders, is not easy. We are working to help provide the kind of service that Spalek did last season, as Romulo has quality and experience for that role.”
