Dries Mertens warned Napoli “beat Liverpool last season too, so it means nothing unless we keep going” in the Champions League.

The Belgian’s penalty broke the deadlock before Fernando Llorente pounced on a Virgil van Dijk error.

“We gave everything tonight and ran so hard. When you take three points at the end of a game like that, it all feels good,” he told Sky Sport Italia after a 2-0 victory.

“It doesn’t mean anything to beat the Champions League holders unless we keep going. We saw Salzburg beat Genk 6-2, so we have to do well in the next game too.

“Last season, we also did well and beat them 1-0 here. I think we prepared well, as we knew what we had to do. We didn’t have enough of the ball in the first half, but we gave our all.

“We lost last season at RB Salzburg in the Europa League, so will not take them for granted. We also have Lecce this weekend and saw that they just beat Torino.”
