Gian Piero Gasperini “thought we were cursed” when Atalanta’s equaliser was disallowed, but Timothy Castagne had one more ace up his sleeve against Fiorentina.

The Orobici were 2-0 down and snatched a 2-2 draw with seconds to spare.

“The lads did so well against a very good team, but it really did seem cursed for a while. Nothing went our way, they scored a fantastic second goal – the first was lucky with Palomino’s deflection – it looked like we were doomed again,” Gasp told Sky Sport Italia.

“However, the players deserve so much credit for this intensity, heart and determination. We didn’t deserve to lose this match.

“I have to congratulate the lads, as they refused to lose and gave everything to get it back on track. We had chances with Duvan Zapata and Luis Muriel, but then we also had that goal disallowed in the final minutes. At that point, we thought it really wasn’t our evening.”

This game arrived just days after a 4-0 Champions League debut defeat to Dinamo Zagreb, so are Atalanta over-stretched?

“We’ve got more options this season, but many of them arrived in the final days of the summer, so we need time to help them settle in.

“I maintain we can do very well this season. I won’t say the position I’m expecting, but we can do well.”
