Lazio chief Claudio Lotito insists jeers are not always racist as he remembers when they were used against “people who had normal, white skin.”

Jeers in the form of monkey chants have seen several black players suffer racial abuse from fans in Serie A this season, and Lotito – a councillor for the League – did not help matters with a controversial take on the situation.

“The whistles don’t always correspond to a discriminatory or racist act,” he told ANSA.

“The whistles don’t always correspond to a discriminatory or racist act,” he told ANSA.

“I remember when I was little, often people who weren’t of colour, who had normal, white skin, made those chants to discourage opponents from scoring in front of the goalkeeper. They should be treated individually.

“We have many black players. I don’t think Lazio distinguish skin colour. Lazio’s conduct in this regard is there for all to see.”
