The Sassuolo patron passed away on Wednesday evening after a long illness, aged 76.

While the Lega Serie A has already mandated a minute’s silence before all games this weekend, the fact Sassuolo’s match is so soon after the tragic news sees it postponed to a later date.

The Sassuolo patron passed away on Wednesday evening after a long illness, aged 76.

While the Lega Serie A has already mandated a minute’s silence before all games this weekend, the fact Sassuolo’s match is so soon after the tragic news sees it postponed to a later date.

The planned kick-off time was Friday at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).

A statement from the Lega this evening confirmed the fixture has been rescheduled for December 18 at 19.45 UK time.

Squinzi had been in charge of Sassuolo since 2002, taking them from Serie C2 to the top flight and even Europa League football, while he was also a leading figure in the Italian business world.

His funeral is set for Monday afternoon in Milan’s Duomo cathedral.
