Karl-Heinz Rummenigge admits Bayern Munich “should’ve waited longer before firing Carlo Ancelotti. I almost cried after announcing the news.”
The director spoke at the Festival dello Sport event in Trento today and discussed the Italian Coaches who sat on the Bayern bench.
“Giovanni Trapattoni won the league title and cup in Germany. He is a lovely man and a sort of ambassador for Italy in Germany. Everyone praised him for his general way of being, as well as his victories.
“Ancelotti is a great character and a great Coach, but in the second season, the results were not what the club was expecting.
“Carlo is a friend and an incredibly calm person, even during the most difficult moments. Perhaps we should’ve waited a little longer before firing him.
“I almost cried after announcing the news. He proved himself to be a great man.”
Rummenigge wore the Inter jersey from 1984-87 and has never forgotten his Serie A experiences.
“My idol remains President Ernesto Pellegrini. The Inter fans were coming off a difficult period and hadn’t won for a long time. Even if I was forced to leave after an injury, my love for the club remains intact. A real friendship with the Nerazzurri fans was born.
“Being a director is more complicated than playing football. Nobody can teach you or show the way, you can only observe those like Pellegrini and try to learn.
“When you lose, you are criticised. President Pellegrini used to invite us all out to dinner, make us feel as if he was part of the squad.”
