He had spent most of his career at Sevilla before trying the experience in Italy from April 2017 to March 2019.

The Spaniard resigned after the club sacked Coach Eusebio Di Francesco, although he now admits that’s not quite what happened.

“When I returned from Roma, or to be more precise, when Roma kicked me out, I started to hear people say that the season was complicated due to many injuries, so I studied the figures,” Monchi told El Confidencial.

“Not being able to use players for 15 per cent of the season has a sporting and economic cost of around €20m, above all when it comes to affecting results.”
