Claudio Ranieri is taking Sampdoria back to the Marco Giampaolo era with a 4-3-1-2 formation for his debut against Roma on Sunday.

Eusebio Di Francesco was fired after six defeats in the opening seven rounds, but was constantly tinkering with the formation, from his traditional 4-3-3 to 3-5-2.

According to the latest reports from the training ground, Ranieri is going back to former boss Giampaolo’s approach, including Gaston Ramirez as the trequartista behind the two strikers.

According to the latest reports from the training ground, Ranieri is going back to former boss Giampaolo’s approach, including Gaston Ramirez as the trequartista behind the two strikers.

They are likely to be Fabio Quagliarella and either Emiliano Rigoni or Manolo Gabbiadini.

Another change Ranieri is planning is the return of Edgar Barreto to the midfield, despite playing only 45 minutes so far this season.

Karol Linetty and Gonzalo Maroni are still on the treatment table.
