Andrea Bertolacci has argued that his failure to play in Serie A for Milan last season was “more a choice of the club” and not Gennaro Gattuso.

Milan splashed out €20m on Bertolacci in the summer of 2015, but the midfielder failed to make any League appearances in the past campaign-and-a-half under Gattuso and recently signed for Sampdoria.

“I knew before signing that I could cross paths with Gattuso again, but I would’ve had no problem with him,” the 28-year-old told Il Secolo XIX.

“Indeed, maybe I’d have always played here. I have a good relationship with him, we always talked to each other clearly and it was he who wanted me at Milan.

“I got to the end of my contract, but it was more a choice of the club. I talked to Gattuso about it and I realised that it wasn’t his doing.

“I trained all year with a smile and had excellent relationships with everyone, but now it’s a closed chapter. I’m looking ahead.”
