Simone Inzaghi tells Claudio Lotito “my work is there for all to see” and is out to “defy” Miroslav Klose after he doubted Lazio’s top-four hopes.
Lotito warned Lazio had to “repay” their larger salary bill and that Inzaghi had to achieve “better results”, despite the Coach delivering a Coppa Italia last season.
Klose, who played for the Aquile between 2011 and 2016, then said he found it “difficult” to see his former club qualify for the Champions League, while admitting he would like to coach them one day.
“My work in these four years is there for all to see,” the current boss said at a Press conference.
“It’s normal for a Coach to make a few mistakes when making decisions. Lotito’s a great motivator and he wanted to give a great boost to the whole club with his words.
“I think we need to raise the bar, we have a team who are well-equipped to make the top four.
“We’ll try to defy him with the work we do.”
Inzaghi’s side face Serie A rivals Atalanta tomorrow, so is it true he threatened his squad they would be in a “mess” if they lost?
“I don’t remember saying this phrase. Certainly it’s an important game, but perhaps those who heard it weren’t focused on what I said.
“I wouldn’t trade our Coppa win for a place in the Champions League because when we reached the Final, we were still in the running for fourth place.
“To reach the Champions League, we need the consistency that Atalanta have. We’re no worse than them in a technical sense.
“Their added value is Gasperini, but it would be ungenerous for the players and club to say that only the Coach deserves credit.”
