Gasperini: 'Both Lazio penalties a joke!'

Gian Piero Gasperini claims Atalanta were robbed in a 3-3 draw with Lazio, reminiscent of the Coppa Italia Final. “Neither of them were penalties!”

The Orobici absolutely dominated the first half at the Olimpico, leading 3-0 and with many more chances, but were pegged back to 3-3 by two Ciro Immobile spot-kicks and a Joaquin Correa strike.

“There were a few distractions, Lazio have a lot of quality in attack, so they created some opportunities and it’s inevitable you cannot completely neutralise them on their own turf,” Gasp told Sky Sport Italia.

“It was still nothing whatsoever compared to the chances we created, both in the first and second half.

“Lazio were on the ropes, then were given a foothold back in the game and allowed to be relaunched. With penalties, nobody can understand a damn thing nowadays.

“Football is a simple sport, but what is this rubbish? Immobile went for a walk, felt something graze him and dived. It’s pretty clear to see. We lost the Coppa Italia here against Lazio on an incident (handball not spotted by VAR in May, ndr), so we’re used to it.

“Even more, on the second penalty, Immobile put his foot in front of De Roon and stopped him reaching the ball. That’s not a penalty either! These aren’t penalties, they are sneakiness. They are gamesmanship.

“I saw a great Atalanta, it’s a shame that three or four times now we’ve had to deal with these incidents that went against us. In the Coppa Italia Final, that incident was totally buried, nobody paid any attention to it, but it was outlandish and extraordinary.”

Nonetheless, this is not the first time that Atalanta have fumbled a lead when they let the tempo drop.

“It’s impossible to play like that for 90 minutes, and the moment the intensity drops – or it becomes more of a battle and less room to play football – we do struggle.

“Now we fly to Manchester City and hope to add more experiences to this wonderful journey.”
