The 32-year-old Belgian bagged a brace during this evening’s 3-2 Champions League victory away to RB Salzburg.

He had been one goal behind Maradona’s total of 115, but in one night matched and surpassed it to reach 116.

Now his next target is the all-time club record set by his former teammate Hamsik, who found the net 121 times in a Partenopei jersey.

Mertens came to the Stadio San Paolo from PSV Eindhoven for under €10m in the summer of 2013.

He was often second choice winger under Rafa Benitez, but his career was transformed by an injury crisis when Maurizio Sarri tried him out as a centre-forward.

‘Ciro’ now has 116 goals in 292 official games for Napoli, along with 69 assists.
