Carlo Ancelotti urged Napoli not to “let our heads drop” after a 1-1 draw with SPAL saw them waste the chance to close on the top three.

Juventus and Inter had already been held this weekend, but instead the Partenopei matched that result and fell further behind Atalanta.

“It was a good performance, we never lost our sharpness on the SPAL counter-attacks, even if we got a little unbalanced in the second half,” the coach told DAZN.

“Obviously, we don’t always have much energy after playing in the Champions League, but we looked in good shape. We must continue with this intensity and the results will eventually prove us right. We were just a little unlucky today.

“In the last half-hour, we played practically just in their final third. I tried to use Jose Callejon wider to get crosses in for Fernando Llorente and Arek Milik. We had chances.

“These are games where it’s difficult to make the most of the spaces. Everyone worked hard, Eljif Elmas could’ve done more in the first half, but he is young and needs support to develop.

“We put in the performance and I have few things to complain about. We mustn’t let our heads drop, as on Wednesday there’s another game to be played.

“When you hit the woodwork every game, it’s difficult to train for that. We must continue this attacking intensity and try to aim slightly better.”

Even when Kevin Malcuit limped off with a knee injury, Faouzi Ghoulam was still not called.

“Ghoulam is not ready to play.”
