The Daily Mirror report that United’s head of development John Murtough has been in contact with Giallorossi to evaluate the performances from the English centre-back.

Roma are impressed with the former Fulham lad and are rumoured to already be keen on signing the player on a permanent deal in January, but it’s expected they will have to wait until the summer for United to decide on the player's future.

Smalling has played five matches so far this season and Roma have kept two clean sheets with the 29-year-old on the pitch. Tomorrow they travel to Udinese to face a side in need of a response after a heavy 7-1 beating from Atalanta.
