Referee Piero Giacomelli has been dropped for this weekend’s Serie A fixtures following his controversial performance between Napoli and Atalanta.

Giacomelli came under fire for not awarding Napoli a penalty, ignoring a VAR review and then letting Atalanta’s equaliser stand in the 2-2 draw on Wednesday.

He also sent off the usually-calm Carlo Ancelotti, who later accused the official of attacking his character.

He also sent off the usually-calm Carlo Ancelotti, who later accused the official of attacking his character.

This is not the first time Giacomelli has attracted controversy, given he riled Lazio with his decisions during their game against Torino in December 2017.

It later emerged that his Facebook page bore a photo of him alongside Roma rival Francesco Totti.

You can check out the referees for Week 11 here as Massimiliano Irrati is similarly given the matchday off.

Irrati caused a stir during Roma’s 4-0 win at Udinese, showing a straight red to Federico Fazio in just the 31st minute.
