Davide Ancelotti admits Napoli only played well for 20 minutes in their 2-1 defeat to Roma. “We’ve been inconsistent, even during a single match.”
Carlo Ancelotti sat out a touchline ban today, so his son and assistant manager Davide was on the bench and spoke to the media afterwards.
“We played well in the 20 minutes approaching half-time, but didn’t reap the rewards for our dominance during that period,” confessed Ancelotti Jr on Sky Sport Italia.
“The worst thing about this game was that for the rest of it, we really didn’t play well at all. The group knows the concepts we have been working on and tries to express itself, but this season we’ve been very inconsistent, even during a single match. We must try to hit that level all the time.
“We were a little too passive in our defending and that has been an issue lately. We can be more determined and compact in these situations, but it’s difficult to work in training when you play three games per week.”
Mario Rui gifted the second penalty by holding his arm up to charge down a cross, whereas Jose Callejon’s handball was with arm down, but visibly moving it towards the ball.
“A defender that goes to contrast a cross needs to be trained all over again to keep his arms behind his back. The more experienced players are therefore at a disadvantage,” argued Ancelotti.
Napoli are seven points worse off than last season and are now four points adrift of Roma in third place.
“We can only analyse our performances and we know that we have to improve, above all in defence. We can’t look at the table now, as we have a fundamental match for our season coming up on Tuesday.”
That will be a Champions League showdown with RB Salzburg at the Stadio San Paolo, having won 3-2 in Austria.
